Myanmar: Gender Advisor

Role overview

The Gender Advisor will provide overall technical support in gender, women and girls economic empowerment in Financial Inclusion. The Volunteer will promote gender-sensitive innovations, provide technical assistance and build capacities of Women’s Economic and Financial Inclusion Project (WEFIP) partners to increase women and girl’s agencies, access and use of financial products and services for economic empowerment and recovery. S/he will undertake needs and evidence-based research, build and strengthen partnerships, provide technical assistance and build capacities of partner’s in gender and inclusive approaches to financial inclusion and economic empowerment and recovery.
The Volunteer will closely work with VSO Social Inclusion and Gender Advisor, Social Accountability Advisor and Resilience Advisor based in VSO Yangon office to ensure inclusion, resilience and accountability in women empowerment and financial inclusion initiatives.
The volunteer will be based in in Yangon and will travel national wide.

Skills, qualifications and experience

• Master’s degree in management, economics, gender studies, social science or related field. A minimum of more than seven years’ experience on women’s economic empowerment and/or gender focus development programme and research experience.
• Experience and demonstrated results in integration of Inclusion in programming, in a developing country context
• Demonstrated understanding of issues and challenges related to women, girls and PWDs economic empowerment and financial service access, use and control
• Experience in advocacy and/or influencing a range of decision-makers e.g. national governments, intergovernmental organisations, UN organisations.
• Excellent communication and social skills, the ability to work closely with a variety of stakeholders in a developing country and non-English speaking context.
• Ability to work independently as well as with multiple stakeholders in a time-pressured environment.

1. Experience with Gender and financial inclusion initiatives.
2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as an integral part of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams.
3. High level of energy and initiative, and ability to deal with rapidly shifting priorities and work demands.
4. Ability to network with partners on various levels.
5. Organized with strong planning skills.
6. Ability to conduct research and analysis and strong synthesis skills.
7. Knowledgeable of the UN system functioning and programming is an asset.
8. Cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability.
9. Experience in capacity strengthening. Training and advisory work
10. Experience of Monitoring and evaluation, particularly of advocacy projects
11. Awareness and sensitivity of political/socio-cultural context of Myanmar and wider South East Asian region

Allowance
As a VSO volunteer, you will be sharing your skills with local communities on a full time basis. VSO will cover your travel, vaccinations, accommodation, and medical insurance costs, along with a local living allowance which will be paid in local currency. This allowance meets reasonable living expenses in country, but will not be enough to send money home. You will also receive some financial support to contribute to your on-going expenses at home.

VSO works with some of the poorest communities in the world which means accommodation varies and will be basic.
